Coinciding with the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) unveiled the ambitious exhibition The World’s Game: Fútbol and Contemporary Art. As part of the exhibition, Hammer and Nail produced The Pick-Up Game, a layered video work combining footage from informal, recreational soccer games with commentary from the participants. Filmed in different neighborhoods around the city, The Pick-Up Game captures Miami’s love of “the world’s game,” while subtly evoking themes and tensions — related to gentrification, notions of public and private space, and immigrant striving — inherent to the area.
