From 1960 to 1962, in response to the perceived threat posed by the communist government of Fidel Castro, more than 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children were relocated to the United States by the U.S. State Department and the Catholic Welfare Bureau. In 2015, HistoryMiami Museum mounted Operation Pedro Pan: The Cuban Children’s Exodus, a major exhibition devoted to this little-known chapter of the Cold War. For the exhibition, Hammer and Nail produced a series of videos in which Pedro Pan alumni recalled their experiences. In “Our Departure from Cuba,” they share their memories of leaving the island.
Operation Pedro Pan was the recipient of a 2016 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History.
